Atheist gets $63,000 scholarship

March 27, 2012

Jessica Ahlquist, the Cranston high school student who caused a furor by challenging a school prayer, didn’t get much of a monetary payout when she won her lawsuit against the Cranston School Committee. The American Humanist Association is remedying that. The group has raised nearly $63,000 which it is giving to Ahlquist as a scholarship fund.

Ahlquist accepted the money in Washington, D.C. over the weekend, where she spoke at a large gathering of atheists. Organizers estimate that roughly 20,000 people attended the “Reason Rally” on a cool, rainy Saturday in the nation’s capitol.

Jessica only received $25 in damages from her lawsuit, which she announced she would be giving back to the school.

In her speech at the rally, she encouraged the audience by saying that what she did, anyone can do. Yes, but too few do, that’s why she’s a hero.
