Woonsocket teachers face possible 10 percent pay cut

March 20, 2012

Woonsocket teachers may be asked to take a 10 percent pay cut to help keep schools running through the end of the school year.

Woonsocket Teachers’ Guild President Jefferey Partington says he met yesterday with Mayor Leo Fontaine and a member of the Woonsocket School Committee. At the meeting, Partington says Fontaine brought up the idea of a 10 percent pay cut, saying homeowners and other city departments are all being asked to make sacrifices to shore up city finances.

Woonsocket city councilors have scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday night to consider a supplemental tax aimed at raising $6.6 million. $4.3 million would go to the school department to help close a $10 million deficit.

Partington says he is considering how to respond to the informal request for a teacher pay cut. The Woonsocket School Committee would have to take the lead in any contract negotiations with city teachers.
