Group seeks stay in prayer banner case

March 8, 2012

Several people are asking a federal judge to let them present a case for why the prayer banner should stay at Cranston High School West. There’s just one problem: school officials have already removed the banner, spending upwards of $2,200 to take it down and re-plaster the wall.

The latest legal twist in this ongoing saga comes from three current students and three Cranston West alums, along with a resident from North Providence. They’ve asked a federal judge to let them argue that the words “Our Heavenly Father” and “amen” on the banner do not violate the constitution.

A federal judge ruled in January that the prayer constituted an inappropriate display of religion in a public school. The judge ordered it removed, and Cranston school officials decided to comply rather than take the risk of losing an appeal.
