URI says goodbye to Coach Baron
The University of Rhode Island has fired men’s basketball coach Jim Baron, who led the Rams for more than a decade. Baron was the Atlantic 10 Conference coach of the year three times during his tenure at URI, but the Rams have struggled mightily this season. URI had a paltry 7 wins and 24 losses, failing to make the Atlantic 10 finals.
School officials say they have decided to release Baron from his contract two years early. They will pay $1.5 million do that. A URI officials says the money will come from externally-generated revenues and not state funding.
URI plans to launch a national search for Baron’s replacement immediately and university officials say they hope to name a new head for the men’s basketball program by early April.
