Central Falls mails teacher layoff notices

February 6, 2012

Central Falls school administrators have put 71 teachers on notice: they may not have jobs in September because of budget constraints.

The tiny district is facing the loss of nearly $2 million in state aid, contributing to a structural deficit that the state has estimated at $5.6 million. Central Falls is also waiting for a bankruptcy judge to rule as to whether school officials or a receiver for the city can negotiate a new teacher contract.
Critics blame Superintendent Fran Gallo for financial mismanagement. A state report has cited a lack of regular fiscal procedures in the district, something school officials have promised to address. The report found no evidence of misappropriated funds in this largely state and federally funded district.
The budget is on the agenda for the Central Falls School Board Tuesday meeting.
