Vote today for Achievement First

February 2, 2012

After many months of debate, the State Board of Education has scheduled a vote tonight on Achievement First. The charter manager is looking to open two elementary schools in Providence. The schools would also serve students from Cranston, Warwick and North Providence.

Opponents are calling for a delay of the vote, saying there is no deadline until the end of March.

Some elected officials have joined a group of parents and union members fighting against the plan. Providence City Councilman Davian Sanchez withdrew his support for Achievement First in December, citing concerns about the treatment of non-native English speakers at one of the group’s schools in New York.

Supporters of Achievement First say parents need more options given the poor performance of many urban public schools. They point to strong test scores especially in Math at Achievement First schools in Connecticut.
