Chariho schools see drop in drug, alcohol use

January 31, 2012

Drug and alcohol use is down among students in Chariho, at least according to a new survey out of Brandeis University.

Researchers interviewed nearly 300 students last year in grades 7, 8 and 11. The Westerly Sun reports that the results show 39 percent of students reported using marijuana, alcohol or cigarettes in the month before the survey, down from 50 percent back in 2009.

The drop-off follows a difficult year in Chariho when it comes to teenagers and alcohol. Three high school students were seriously injured and a member of the school committee stepped down after a car accident involving alcohol.

Chariho Superintendent Barry Ricci tells the Sun that alcohol and drug use are higher in Chariho than elsewhere in Rhode Island, a trend he would like to change.
