Portsmouth awaits word from Supreme Court

December 14, 2011

Attorneys for the Portsmouth school district have requested a stay from the state’s highest court in their quest to change the way teachers are hired, fired and assigned to classrooms.

Portsmouth school officials are asking the Supreme Court to stay a hearing at the State Labor Relations Board. At issue is a hiring system that removes seniority as the main factor in teacher hiring and placement decisions.

The district tried to impose the new hiring system, but a superior court judge ruled against the move, referring the matter to the labor relations board. The district wants the Supreme Court to delay a hearing scheduled for this Thursday while it considers an appeal of the case.
