Is a course syllabus art?

December 7, 2011

Rhode Island College is about to start publishing syllabi in what the college calls a first-of-its-kind scholarly journal. The peer-reviewed publication will be edited by RIC School of Education Dean Sasha Sidorkin, who says a good syllabus is a piece of scholarship, but a great one is an art form.

“A research or theory paper goes through a peer-review process to be recognized and validated; the same process should be available to course materials,” Sidorkin writes in a press release about the new journal. “This is a small step towards taking college teaching as seriously as we take research.”

The publication will be called Syllabus. Issue one is due out in 2012.
