Supporters, opponents prepare for Achievement First round 2

December 5, 2011

A series of meetings on charter manager Achievement First’s bid for mayoral academies begins tomorrow in Providence.

First the city council will hear from school officials about  how the proposal would affect Providence school finances. The presentation will be given to the council’s subcommitte on education, which convenes Tuesday at 5:30 in City Hall.

Next, the State Department of Education will hold two hearings to get public input on the charter proposal:

Wednesday, December 7, at 6 p.m.
Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School, 195 Nelson St., Providence 02908

Thursday, December 8, at 6 p.m.
Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School, 375 Adelaide Ave., Providence 02907.

Community and advocacy groups both for and against Achievement First have been sending emails to their members, urging them to attend the meetings.

The Providence Journal reports that school superintendents in other cities have requested additional hearings, arguing that local finances could be affected if student choose to attend any potential new charter schools. The  districts asking for local hearings inlclude Warwick and North Providence.
