Still no contract for Central Falls teachers

November 23, 2011

Governor Lincoln Chafee has announced contract agreements with Central Falls police and firefighter unions, but Central Falls teachers have yet to conclude negotiations with receiver Robert Flanders, Jr.

Flanders took over contract negotiations from the school department earlier this year, after school officials declared an impasse and tried to impose contract terms. Teachers’ union officials say they are now waiting for Flanders’ team to complete an audit of the school department’s finances and submit a contract proposal.

The union says it is hoping to reach a settlement on the teachers’ contract but is not ruling out the possibility of a lawsuit. Union officials say there are legal questions about the receiver’s right to takeover the school department, which is overseen by a state-appointed school board and not local elected officials.
