Whitehouse urges support for Pell Grants

November 16, 2011

Speaking this morning on the Senate floor, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse urged against cuts to the Pell Grant Program, which provides tuition assistance for college students.

Whitehouse said he understands the need for federal budget cuts, but he argued that Pell Grants are the wrong place to look.

“Cutting Pell Grants as we face our debt and our deficit problem would be a wild mistake,” Whitehouse said. “The Pell Grant helps people who can’t afford college have the chance to go to college.”

Whitehouse stressed the fact that student loan debt in the United States recently hit historic levels, making this the wrong time to reduce tuition assistance programs. He was joined on the Senate floor by U.S. Senators Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Jon Tester (D-MT), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT).
