RISD faculty union backs occupy protesters

November 4, 2011

The Rhode Island School of Design’s full-time and part-time faculty unions are putting a word in for the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators, who have called attention to the issue of student loan burrdens.

In a written statement, the unions say they echo protesters calls for student debt relief.

“As teachers we insist upon the centrality of education to eliminating the social and economic inequalities which plague this country,” the statement reads. “We call upon the United States government to increase respect and funding for education, particularly in economically distressed areas of our country.”

They ought to call upon their own administration to lower tuition.

Is there more to the statement above? If not, I got to say it’s a pretty lame. RISD is a super expensive school. To not make any mention of the inequality that occurs on that very campus is just coy. In this case, the problem isn’t the government. It’s the schools.
