Regents approve new teacher certification system

November 4, 2011

In a 7-2 vote, the State Board of Education has passed new rules tying teacher certification to annual performance reviews. Under the new system, teachers who receive an “ineffective” rating for five consecutive years would lose their teaching credentials.

Board of Regents Chair George Caruolo says the new rules are step toward improving a system that has “ossified over decades.”

“For any teacher in Rhode Island who’s trying hard and is committed to their work – there’s nothing for them to fear in this,” Caruolo added.

Critics say the state’s new teacher evaluations are untested and should not be linked to teaching credentials. They also note that the new system does not require teachers to get a Masters degree to maintain certification.
