Student dies after URI baseball workout
University officials say they still do not know what caused the death of 20-year-old Joseph Paul Ciancola. The Connecticut native had a un-named medical emergency during a preseason practice on Monday. He died at 5:25 p.m. Thursday at Rhode Island Hospital.
In a statement to the public, URI President David Dooley says Ciancola will be missed by the entire university community. Athletic Director Thorr Bjorn expresses his deepest sympathies for the player’s family and friends.
According to URI, the baseball practice was supervised by a certified coach, who had credentials from the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
