RI districts receive mixed grades on AP

Barrington High School and Exeter West Greenwich High School led the pack in AP testing for 2010-11, with 98% of students who took exams getting a 3 or higher. Burrillville, South Kingstown and Lincoln also had passing rates topping 80%.

At the bottom of the list, eight high schools in Providence had fewer than 1% of students passing AP exams. 33% of Newport students passed their AP tests, and just 15% of Central Falls students earned a 3 or better.

Classical High School in Providence had the highest number of AP test takers with 279 students taking a total of 501 exams. However, Classical’s passing rate was just 60%. Barrington High School had 264 AP test takers, and North Kingstown had 218 test takers with a pass rate of 77%.

Shea High School in Pawtucket, Smithfield High School, North Providence High School and Cooley High School in Providence all had fewer than 10 students taking AP tests. The State Department of Education says some schools may offer fewer AP classes, choosing instead to focus on other types of advanced classes and cross registartion at RIC or CCRI.
