Legislators protest immigrant tuition policy

October 4, 2011

A group of six state lawmakers are criticizing Governor Lincoln Chafee for extending in-state tuition to some undocumented college students. The state Board of Higher Education voted last week to grant in-state tuition rates to students who graduate from local high schools even if they are not in this country legally. Critics say that decision should be made by the General Assembly, not a board whose members are appointed.

The six legislators criticizing the tuition policy are Republican Sens. Nicholas Kettle and Francis Maher; Republican Reps. Doreen Costa, Joseph Trillo and Michael Chippendale; and Democrat Peter Palumbo. According to a statement, they are planning a press conference and rally Wednesday afternoon on Smith Hill.
