Woonsocket names new superintendent

August 12, 2011

The Woonsocket School Committee has selected Giovanna Donoyan as its new superintendent of Schools. Donoyan is currently the assistant superintendent in North Providence. Details of her contract and compensation package have not been released pending approval by the school committee.

Donoyan has degrees in education and business and began her career as a sixth grade teacher in Coventry. Woonsocket Interim Superintendent Colette Trailor calls her a good choice for an urban district facing budget cuts and staff and program reductions.

“That is a challenge because we can’t do business as we did before,” said Trailor, who took over on a temporary basis following the departure of Superintendent Robert Gerardi this summer. “With her business background she brings good insight into dealing with fiscal issues which I think will complement the decision making processes.”

Trailor says Donoyan met with administrative staff yesterday when she was in Woonsocket to negotiate details of her contract. She will stay on as assistant superintendent in North Providence until the end of August, so she can oversee the first day of the new school year.
