CF schools lose out in state budget

July 7, 2011

The budget recently signed by Governor Lincoln Chafee includes a significant cut for the state-funded Central Falls school district.

Lawmakers have reduced funding for Central Falls schools by nearly $2 million. The cut is part of a new formula for distributing public school aid, which calls for Central Falls city officials to start picking up part of the tab for their elementary and secondary students.

Department of Education officials say Governor Lincoln Chafee originally suggested a special fund to help the cash-strapped city, but lawmakers nixed the proposal. Central Falls school officials say they are concerned they will not be able to recoup the funding from the city, which faces bankruptcy.

Central Falls had a $2.2 million surplus in its school budget this year, but Superintendent Fran Gallo says she had hoped that money would cushion the blow from this and future funding cuts. Gallo says the state has taken the surplus away from the school department and used it to help the city meet other financial obligations.
