Help for Central Falls?

June 17, 2011

A mediator may be headed to Central Falls to work on easing tension between parents, teachers and administrators. After a reent visit to the district, State Education Commissioner Deborah Gist says many parents believe their children are suffering because of strained relations between district teachers and administrators.

“I made an offer to them to see if we could bring in someone to help facilitate some conversations among students and parents and teachers and the administration,” Gist said. “And I intend to follow through on that.”

Department of Education staffers continue to monitor the state-ordered turnaround effort at Central Falls High School. Gist says she has confidence that district administrators are doing what needs to be done.

“But we do know there is a culture issue in terms of the relationships that are there and the morale of the teachers,” Gist said.
