Providence names acting academic chief

May 10, 2011

Paula Shannon takes over the position of chief academic officer recently vacated by Sharon Contreras, who left to become superintendent of Syracuse public schools.
Providence Superintendent Tom Brady, who is leaving himself at the end of the school year, says Shannon’s appointment will allow for continuity while the district searches for a permanent replacement for Contreras.
The chief academic officer runs the Division of Teaching and Learning, the largest functional office in the Providence Public Schools, according to district officials. Responsibilities include overseeing the work of teachers, instructional assistants, principals and assistant principals in addition to central office administrators, and other support personnel.
Paula Shannon holds a B.S. from Notre Dame, a master’s degree in education from Lesley University and a master’s from University of Rhode Island. District officials say she has been with PPSD since 1999 in a variety of positions, including teacher, literacy coach, and director of curriculum development.
