Another recusal in Brown rape case

March 9, 2011

From the AP:

A federal judge has recused himself from a lawsuit brought by a former Brown University student who says he was falsely accused of rape.

After hearing arguments by a lawyer for William McCormick III, U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Lagueux on Wednesday recused himself because of his relationship with a lawyer involved in the case.

Lagueux was represented in judicial proceedings in 1988 by Joseph Cavanagh, who’s now the attorney for McCormick’s accuser and her father.

McCormick is also suing the university, saying he was falsely accused of rape and unfairly pressured to leave school.

The only other two judges on the court have already recused themselves because of other conflicts. Lagueux says a federal judge in New Hampshire will likely hear the case.
