Maeda unpopular with RISD faculty

March 3, 2011

An overwhelming majority of RISD Professors have voted no confidence in the school’s President John Maeda and Provost Jessie Shefrin. The vote at a faculty meeting last night was 147-32 in favor of the no confidence motion, with 15 abstentions.

The faculty has also expressed concerns about a draft strategic plan, which Maeda presented to the RISD board over the weekend. A RISD spokesperson says the board voted to support the plan in principle, despite the faculty’s objection.

In other news, the board voted to increase tuition by 3.9% to $39,482 for the 2011-2012 school year. RISD officials say it’s the lowest increase in over 30 years.

And Dawn Barrett, Dean of the School of Architecture at RISD is about to become the president of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The move comes just as Barrett’s position at RISD is being dropped under controversial administrative reorganization that merges leadership of the schools of fine art and design.
