Maeda responds to faculty vote

March 3, 2011

RISD President John Maeda has this response to faculty after an overwhelming no confidence vote last night:

“President Maeda and Provost Shefrin have heard the point of view of the faculty and take it very seriously. In academic communities, the exchange of thoughts and ideas is the key to progress. They will continue a constructive, ongoing dialogue with every key constituency in the RISD community.”

RISD Board Chair Merrill Sherman is affirming her support for Maeda.

“President Maeda and his administration continue to have the full support of RISD’s Board of Trustees,” Sherman said in a written statement.

“full support” —funny–wasn’t that what they said about Roger Mandle just before HE stepped down? Wonder if the wonder boy is placing calls to MIT today…..

So this means Maeda will be getting a golden parachute like Mandle did and go off to the middle east to design gaudy, tasteless sneakers for some sheik?

Mandle stepped down to manage art museums for the sheik of Qatar…hardly a scandalous departure (not to mention that he left the school’s finances in tip-top shape).

Perhaps the faculty needs to have a vote of no confidence in Merrill Sherman.
