Central Falls annouces performance-related teacher layoffs…
…but not too many.
11 teachers face layoffs because the district says their performance has not been good enough. Three of those teachers have tenure and work at Central Falls High School.
More than 100 teachers district-wide have been told they may not be rehired next year, as school officials prepare for budget cutbacks.
Superintendent Fran Gallo says 11 of those layoffs are for performance reasons.
High school teachers in Central Falls agreed to more regular evaluations as part of a high-profile turnaround plan. All districts must notify teachers by March 1st if their jobs are at risk, though it is usually teachers with fewer years on the job, not poor evaluations, who face layoffs.
Central Falls teachers’ union leaders did not immediately return calls for comment.
