Brown offers new course in conservative politics

February 7, 2011

A visiting professor in Brown’s Political Science Department has designed a new course on conservative political philosophy. Steven Calabresi is a professor from Northwestern University who served in the Reagan and first Bush administrations.

The course, titled “Modern Conservatism in America: Conservative Thought in the 20th Century,” is the brain child of Calabresi and five Brown students.

Supporters say it will bring more ideological balance to the university’s course offerings.

Brown officials say their curriculum encourages students to explore a broad variety of subjects and viewpoints.

“Undergraduates have an unusual degree of freedom in designing their general education,” says university spokeswoman Sarah Kidwell, who points out that this includes the ability to design independent courses in collaboration with faculty members.
