South County residents oppose ‘pub crawl’ shuttle

February 2, 2011

Some Narragansett and South Kingstown residents are concerned about a shuttle that would carry students from the University of Rhode Island to area bars.

The Public Utilities Commission gave a green light to the Rogue Island Jitney last month. The company has proposed a 15-person bus that would travel from the university’s Fraternity Circle to several nearby pubs on weekend nights.

State Senator James Sheehan, a Narragansett Democrat, has written a letter to the State Board of Governor’s for Higher Education urging it not to use Fraternity Circle as a bus stop. Sheehan says even if the shuttle is not technically a “pub crawl,” it would risk damaging the university’s image.

The jitney “will exist for the sole purpose of transporting drunken students to and from campus and bars,” Sheehan says.

University of Rhode Island officials tell the Providence Journal they plan to appeal the PUC ruling in Superior Court.
