Chafee to name new board of ed members

February 1, 2011

Governor Lincoln Chafee has scheduled a press conference this afternoon to announce five appointments to the State Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Schools.

The 9-member board sets education policy for public schools around the state. All but one member is up for reappointment.

Yesterday, Chafee tapped Board of Regents Chair Robert Flanders, Jr. to become the receiver for Central Falls. Some education reform advocates have urged Chafee to keep the board intact or appoint only new members who will continue the current course on education reform, including teacher evaluations and diplomas linked to student test scores.

Update:  Due to the snow storm, this announcement is likely delayed. Keep tuning in for the latest…

New update: The governor has decided to move up the announcement, not delay it. I guess snow can close schools but will not stop the furious pace of education news in the Ocean State.
