Gist on ‘Newsmakers’

January 7, 2011

Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist makes an appearance this weekend on WPRI’s ‘Newsmakers.’ Here’s a preview courtesy of WRNI Political Reporter Ian Donnis:

Responding to questions about whether she plans to stay on now that Lincoln Chafee has become governor, Gist says she remains committed to the Ocean State. She says she is concerned that Chafee’s call for a cap on charter schools could threaten federal Race to the Top funding, but she says she met with the newly sworn in governor as recently as this Thursday.

Gist also reiterates her support for the management team at Central Falls High School. She says she plans to let the overhaul run its course, though state officials have said they will reconstitute the school if the effort ultimately proves unsuccessful.

Central Falls parents this week called for state intervention at the high school.
