Update: Gist convenes meeting with Central Falls teachers

December 1, 2010

State Education Chief Deborah Gist will hold a roundtable discussion with Central Falls High School teachers later this month. In a letter to school officials, Gist says her aim is to get feedback on the implementation of a school turnaround effort currently in progress.

The overhaul of Central Falls High School has been criticized by some teachers, who say two new principals have failed to establish clear discipline policies this year. The teachers have also called for a new oversight committee that would include representatives from the Department of Education, the teachers union and school personnel.

Central Falls High School administrators say teachers’ claims about discipline problems are overblown.

State Education Board Chair Robert Flanders recently told WRNI that he will consider stepping up state involvement at the high school if necessary. He said he was concerned by reports that 15 percent of teachers are absent from the school on a daily basis.
