Harvard ready to reinstate ROTC

November 19, 2010

Harvard President Drew Gilpin says the university will end a ban on military reserve training programs when the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” goes into effect. Gilpin has suggested as much before, but she reiterated the position this week during an introduction to a speech by Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Harvard banned ROTC in 1969 during the movement against the Vietnam War. The programs were discontinued at Brown University in the early 1970’s, though some students and alumni have since called for their reinstatement.

Brown officials say students who want to do ROTC can participate through Providence College.
