NYC schools chief steps down

November 10, 2010

New York City Schools Chief Joel Klein is leaving, and a media executive will replace him. The announcement comes after researchers raised questions about the validity of test scores in New York, which seemed to be rising. After the tests were re-calibrated, passing rates fell precipitously this year.

NPR reports that some parents are concerned by Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s choice of a former magazine executive to replace Klein.

Klein has been controversial because of his focus on test scores and his willingness to close schools that fail to perform.
