Chafee mum on Gist’s future

November 4, 2010

Governor-elect Lincoln Chafee was non-committal yesterday when asked whether he hopes to see state Education Commissioner Deborah Gist remain in Rhode Island.

Chafee credited Gist with helping establish a funding formula for Rhode Island public schools but stopped short of committing to retain Gist in her position.

“I’m not making any presumptions on who’s going to be on what team,” Chafee said, adding, “she’s shaking things up in Rhode Island and that’s good, and she has a lot of fans here. I recognize that.”

Chafee made the comments during his first post-election news conference at his campaign headquarters in Warwick.

Update: A spokesperson from the State Department of Education says Gist and Chafee have not spoken since the election Tuesday night. Gist has said she is ready and eager to work with the new governor.
