D.C. schools chief resigns

October 13, 2010

Michelle Rhee, the controversial chancellor of schools in Washington, D.C., says she will step down. Political observers have been questioning Rhee’s future with D.C. public schools ever since Mayor Adrian Fenty was unseated in a primary challenge last month.

Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist has been mentioned as a possible successor to Rhee. Gist came to Rhode Island from a top post in D.C., and her husband still lives there.

Gist has said she has no plans to leave Rhode Island.

“I’m totally focused on Rhode Island right now,” was her response to questions at a recent press conference. A spokesperson from the Rhode Island Department of Education says Gist is not currently a candidate for any job outside of the state.
