Higher ed board cancels budget vote
The state board of higher education will reschedule a Monday meeting at which members were expected to approve a budget request for more funding from the state. A spokesman says several board members had conflicts that would prevent them from attending the meeting. The 15-member board needs a quorum in order to vote. Department officials say they will reschedule the vote as soon as possible.
The budget is part of an effort to avoid tuition hikes at the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College and the Community College of Rhode Island. Higher education officials say they have to set tution rates for the 2011-2012 school year soon so that students and prospective students can plan accordingly.
