Teen “Hub” opens in Providence

September 30, 2010

A new community center called “The Hub” is now open for Providence’s 13,000 high school-aged residents. Director Damien Ewens says the goal is to connect more teens to afterschool programs and other services, such as job and internship opportunities and college counseling.

“Its almost like a youth center on a college campus,” says Ewans. “Providers can be at the actual center giving their services but also youth can be there connecting to those services and telling us what else needs to be done.”

Organizers say the center is unique because it was designed and staffed largely by students. The Hub is an extension The Providence Afterschool Alliance, which has gained national attention for improving middle school students’ access to afterschool activities.
