Minority participation increases on AP tests

September 13, 2010

Roughly 240 Hispanic students in Rhode Island public schools took the AP test during the last school year. The number may be small, but it represents an 84% increase over the prior year. 75 African-American students also took the test, a 19% increase from 2009.

“Our priority is to improve our graduation rate and to ensure that all of our graduates are ready for success in college and careers,” wrote State Board of Education Chairman Robert Flanders in a press release about the test results. “We are trending in the right direction on participation rates, but our improvements are not aggressive enough and we are concerned about the decline in our SAT scores.”

2,726 public school students in Rhode Island took AP exams during the last school year, an overall increase of 4.2%. Pass rates, which is to say students earning a score of three or better on AP exams, were about 60%, nearly 10% better than in 2009.
