Schools differ in approach to Earl
Cumberland school officials have decided to cancel classes Friday as Hurricane Earl is forecast to bring heavy rains and wind to Rhode Island. Bristol-Warren school officials say they will do the same.
Several districts are planning early dismissals, including North Kingstown, Exeter-West Greenwich, Chariho and Little Compton. Newport school officials say it’s too early to make the call.
“I’ve seen these situations happen when everything goes right out to sea,” said Newport Superintendent Jack Ambrogi. “It’s still too early to tell.”
Ambrogi says he will keep an eye on the forecast as the storm approaches Rhode Island. Students will be sent home early if necessary.
“Parents know that’s a possibility,” Ambrogi said. “I haven’t made a bad call yet, and I don’t intend to make one now.”
