Poll: Americans want education reform

August 25, 2010

Most Americans support charter schools, performance pay for teachers and interventions in struggling schools. That according to a new PDK/Gallup poll that shows Americans believe improving public education is a top national priority.

The survey also shows that most Americans do not support firing teachers or turning underperforming schools into charter schools.

Education Week says the results cast doubt on public support for some of the Obama Administration’s signature education reform initiatives. Eduwonk questions the poll’s methodology, particularly on the school turnarounds question.

What’s the biggest challenge most respondents said schools currently face? Not enough funding.
