Jury deliberates in URI rape case

July 29, 2010

The future of two University of Rhode Island students is now in the hands of jurors, who must decide whether the pair is guilty of rape. The case involves a 2008 incident in which a female student claims she was forced to have sex at a party in a university dorm.

Attorneys finished their closing arguments today. The attorney for one of the accused students said regret after a night of partying was behind the rape accusation, saying the alleged victim suffered from “morning after syndrome,” reports the Providence Journal.

University officials say the victim first reported the alleged sexual assault to campus police. After an investigation, the case was turned over to the state Attorney General’s Office.

The accused students, Yaw Pepperaw and Estifanos Gizaw are currently enrolled students at URI. A third defendent, Marena Melillo, was granted administrative leave and will be tried separately.
