RI makes the cut

Rhode Island is one of 19 finalists for round two of the federal Race to the Top competition. The state is seeking $75 million for education reforms including controversial teacher evaluations linked to student test scores.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan made the announcement today in a speech in Washington, D.C. Massachusetts, which is seeking $250 million is also a finalist.

Rhode Island was a finalist in round one of the competition, but just two states, Delaware and Tennessee won grants. The winners of round two will be announced in late August or early September.
