Teachers’ union endorses Segal for U.S. Congress

July 26, 2010

The Rhode Island Federation of Teachers and Health Professionals, one of the state’s two teachers’ unions, has endorsed Democrat David Segal in the race to fill the congressional seat vacated by Patrick Kennedy. Union leaders say they chose Segal over Democratic rivals Bill Lynch, Anthony Gemma and Providence Mayor David Cicilline because of his record as a state legislator.

“David Segal earned the endorsement of the RIFTHP by being a strong voice for education and working families in the RI General Assembly,” said Federation President Marcia Reback in a campaign press release. “We are sure that he will carry on his good works in the Congress for District 1.”

The Rhode Island Federation of Teachers and Health Professionals represents 10,000 Rhode Island workers, including roughly 7,000 public school teachers, most of them in urban districts. The union has also endorsed Independent candidate and former U.S. Senator Lincoln Chafee’s bid for Governor.
