Pre-K demo seeks students

July 20, 2010

State officials are looking for more students to fill state-funded preschools in Warwick and Central Falls. Two other communities, Providence and Woonsocket, have already filled the seats in their preschool classrooms.

A total of 126 slots were available at seven different sites. State officials say they are surprised that demand has not been higher for the free pilot program, which begins its second year this fall. The experiment in state-funded preschools has been lauded by early childhood education advocates, who say it is a key component in efforts to lower achievement gaps for minority and low income students.
