ACLU calls for removal of “prayer banner” from Cranston West HS

July 20, 2010

A banner at Cranston West high school asks “our heavenly father” to help students and teachers be their best. That’s a prayer and it should be removed, according to the ACLU.

“It’s a prominently displayed daily prayer that anybody entering the public high school auditorium sees,” said Steve Brown, director of the Rhode Island chapter of the ACLU. “It seems very clear to us that public schools simply have no business sponsoring a display like this.”

School officials declined to comment pending a closed-door meeting tonight with attorneys. Brown says a parent raised concerns about the banner last month. It has apparently been hanging in the high school auditorium for many years.
