Hearings to begin for Hope High School

July 7, 2010

Attorneys for three students at Hope High School will make their case tomorrow to preserve the school’s block schedule. The administrative hearing before a Department of Education official is the first of two scheduled this month. The Providence School Department’s plan to change the schedule at Hope High has generated protests from some students and teachers, who say they like the longer class periods and increased planning time that the block schedule allows. School department officials say they want Hope to use the same schedule as other high schools in the district.

In their appeal of the Providence School Board’s decision to change the schedule, the students argue that it violates state education regulations, which require school districts to maintain current levels of planning time for teachers. The schedule change would reduce common planning time but would not bring it below the state-mandated minimum of 30 minutes per week.

More to the point, the students claim that the changes violate regulations set out in RI’s Basic Education Plan.

If every high school in Providence changed their schedules, of which at least three other schools have the same schedule, why not Hope High School. Additionally, if Hope High School changes its schedule, then every other high school in Providence has the right to revert to their block schedule.
