Central Falls selects dual principals for high school turnaround

June 2, 2010

Central Falls school officials have named two new principals to lead their high school through a state-ordered turnaround effort. Evelyn Jones, an instruction and curriculum specialist, currently works as an assistant principal at Central Falls High School. She will be joined by co-principal Sonn Sam, a principal at the Met School in Providence since 2006. The Met is an alternative high school with impressive graduation rates, but it has struggled to raise student test scores in Math.

District officials have also selected Providence resident Victor Capellan to serve as a turnaround officer at the district level. The position is required for any school district with a turnaround school. Capellan is the assistant superintendant for the Fall River Public Schools in Massachusetts, he has also worked as Fall River’s director of school improvement.

The Central Falls school board is scheduled to vote on the three appointments June 8th. All candidates would begin work in the district at the end of the current school year.
