Central Falls board to vote on teacher recalls
The Central Falls School Board is expected to vote tonight to officially rescind teacher terminations at Central Falls High School. The teachers’ union reached an agreement earlier this month with district leaders that allows teachers to keep their jobs, though they must work longer hours under a state-ordered plan to raise student achievement. The agreement halted a controversial plan to fire the entire high school faculty, which placed Central Falls at the center of the national debate over public school reform.
District leaders are in the process of hiring a new principal and designing a slate of reforms aimed at boosting high school test scores and graduation rates. The school board has hired the Boston-based education consulting firm MassInsight to help develop the plan.
