Key lawmaker vows school funding reform
House Speaker Gordon Fox pledged today to pass a funding formula that would more fairly distribute state aid to school districts. “We will get a funding formula this year,” Fox told a group of educators and lawmakers gathered for an update on the state’s “Race to the Top” education grant application. The funding formula has been something of a political football in the past because many school districts stand to lose significant amounts of money. Advocates argue that the current system is short-changing urban districts because it does not take student enrollment or community need into account.
Rhode Island is the only state in the country that doesn’t have a funding formula. State officials say that could be a barrier to winning up to $75 million in the “Race to the Top” competition.
