State extends union deadline for ‘Race to the Top’ application
Teachers union leaders have until next Wednesday to sign onto Rhode Island’s bid for the second round of the federal Race to the Top competition. The 3-day extension suggests state officials have not been able to secure broad union support for an ambitious slate of school reforms. Union leaders say they are still in talks with state and local officials and would not rule out the possibility that some locals may sign on. School districts have until the end of the day Friday to decide whether they will participate in programs funded by the grant. The application seeking $75 million is due June 1st.
