Hope high school students plan walkout

May 12, 2010

Students at Hope High School plan to march to district headquarters tomorrow morning to protest schedule changes at the school.

The district is moving Hope from a four period block schedule to a six period schedule, which district leaders say will save money, increase time for science classes and standardize Hope’s schedule with that of other high schools in the city.

Many students and teachers credit the block schedule with improvements in test scores and student engagement at Hope following a state intervention five years ago. Under the new schedule, students say they have more time for in-depth classes and more time to get to know teachers during extended advisory periods.

Members of the group Hope United, which organized the walkout, say school administrators have warned students not to leave class tomorrow. They are still hoping for strong turnout at the protest.
